Interview with my grandfather
I asked my grandfather, how his world looked like, when he was younger (he is about seventy years old now). I was stunned, that Poland was that much different from today’s world. For example food wasn’t processed as it is today. People had to buy simple products with no artificial additions. Also water wasn’t so easy to get as it is today. Not all houses in the city had it, people had to get if from wells. Also, used water wasn’t filtered in any way, so pollution came straight into the river Vistula.
However, the most important factor I wanted to know about was obviously energy. Of course, even in my granddad’s youth it was quite important, but not in the way as we look at it today. In the past people, including my ‘subject’, were concerning energy as something still expanding and to be honest nobody paid attention how it does affect the environment. For example heating - everybody used coal and wood to warm their houses. Therefore air was very polluted. There were no actions to fight with that problem.
Today everybody pays much more attention to it. There are many ways to produce energy, each one more and more environmental-friendly. There are lots of companies and organizations which make recycling and lowering pollution possible.
For example, my granddad remembers, that litter used to be just thrown out into some holes or even on the streets. Today people have trashes, some even for different kinds of garbage.
Therefore you can assume, that life today is much more eco-friendly than it used to be. It is quite true, but we still can make it better. Scientists are still working on eco-friendly cars and other things. Let’s hope that they do their job well, because we don’t want to live in a polluted world, do we?
