Where You Go

the interview with my mother =]

Knowing that I have to do assignment 3, interview my grandparents or other older people, I remembered having been told about my mother’s childhood when I was young. In that evening, my mother and I went outside for dinner. Having been relaxed, my mother started to describe her life in her past 40 years.

My mother’s life in the past was not as convenient as it is now. She grew up in a big family in rural area. Therefore, she lived among the nature and few electrical appliances were used. She was woken up in the morning by the crowing cock. The breakfast was the leftover from the day before, and then she went to school. Undoubtedly, we could hardly find many vehicles running on the road in the past. Not to mention to any motor mobiles, the only ways for traveling are bicycle, motorbike and walking! Although some cars were existent, her family could not afford to buy one. It is easy to guess how my mother went to school, and what you are thinking is right, she walked to school. During the way to school, she never forgot to deliver the vegetable she grew in her garden to the market. After school, she went home and prepared the dinner with her sisters. She elucidated how she cooked rice by only a pot and charcoal. Charcoal was the main source of fuel used at that time. It was utilized in many appliances, for examples; a rice cooker, a stove and an iron. It was also used in winter for making a fire to give warmth to people. Moreover, my mother talked about the use of water. People had to stored water in the jar, and water might be from either rain or other natural resources such as river and pond, no tap water was supplied. There was no bathroom, no toilet, so I was astonished about how people would do when they wanted to go to WC. My mother smiled and kept on telling that she had to walk in the wood or other private places to do it. Leaves and sticks were used instead of tissue paper, or just washed it. At night, if my mother wanted to do homework, she used a lamp to give out light. You can see that the life in the past is absolutely different from now. Little convenience was provided. There was no television, no refrigerator, no air-conditioner, of course no computer! However, some electric light bulbs and fans were used, but not much.

After describing her life in the past, she compared her life with mine. She said that technology had changed our life in many ways. Certainly, technology makes our life easier, but the easier our lives go, the more natural resource are used. Nowadays, the energy consumption continues increasing while the natural resources are diminishing. How we can save the resources is still the important issue to be discussed and solved. Is it the time for you to help and save our world for a sustainable life?
